James is a Research Fellow in the microfabrication of millimetre-wave circuits.


He is currently working on the MILLIBAN project; an EPSRC funded scheme that is looking into novel methods of producing ultra-low-loss millimetre wave components such as beam-scanners and phase shifters for the future of 5G communication systems.

Biography

James graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2013 with a MEng (Hons) in Electronic and Computer Engineering. Continuing at the University, he went on to do a Ph.D. in bioengineering, studying the development and microfabrication of neural interfaces, along with how neural interface designs can be optimised to maximise sensitivity and minimise biological rejection.

James has worked on a wide range of research including photobiomodulation, neural interfaces, drug delivery, metamaterials, antenna design and EM modelling. He has worked in close collaboration with the University’s Medical, Dental, Materials and Metallurgy, and Electronic Engineering Departments, and on projects working in collaboration with the European Space Agency among others.

James joined the Metamaterials Engineering Laboratory in 2017 where he is working to develop novel components for millimetre-wave and terahertz systems for improved 5G communications.

Research

James specialises in the use of polyimide and other polymers to fabricate microstructures used for sensing and communication systems. He has previously developed neural sensors for the bidirectional communication between electronics and nerves.

James is currently working on the electromagnetic design and fabrication of both macro and microstructures for millimetre-wave and terahertz systems. Continuing to specialise in polyimide and SU8 processes, he is also developing novel tuning techniques using piezoelectric and electroactive polymer actuation.
