Charlene is an interdisciplinary researcher with a PhD in Human Geography from the University of Birmingham, an MA in Applied Linguistics and Communication from Birkbeck College, University of London and a BA in Sociology from Birmingham City University. Her PhD research asked how Caribbean restaurants and takeaways advertise to the superdiverse Ladywood constituency using the linguistic method of Multimodal Discourse Analysis.
She completed her CENTRE-UB Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham (in partnership with the Royal Geographical Society and Geographical Association). Her research focused on behavioural research in relation to Caribbean food advertising in the superdiverse city of Birmingham and how to use food to teach geography education.
She is currently a CENTA Teaching and Training Fellow, responsible for the planning, preparation and delivery of training sessions for CENTA students and designing a holistic curriculum related to environmental science, wider research competencies and cross-sector transferable skills.
Charlene’s research interests lie in the fields of food, marketing, migration, superdiversity, Caribbean diaspora and public and school engagement.
