Professor Yuli Shan is an expert in Climate Change and Sustainable Transitions. His interdisciplinary research aims to reveal how human activities affect global and regional climate change. He also seeks alternative low-carbon approaches towards the achievement of climate targets and a net-zero emission society. 

He is a Global Highly Cited Researcher (since 2020) and a Fellow of Royal Geographical Society (since 2024). His research achievement and international reputation has resulted in 20+ academic awards, 160+ publications in high-impact journals, 16k+ citations, high-profile media coverage, international conference and committee invites and contributing authorship for the IPCC 6th Assessment Report.

Biography

Prof. Yuli Shan is a Professor in Sustainability at the University of Birmingham. Before joining the University of Birmingham, he worked at the University of Groningen as a Faculty Research Fellow. He got a doctoral degree from the University of East Anglia (2018) and a master’s degree from Fudan University (2014).

Yuli is a Global Highly Cited Researcher and the World's Top 2% Scientist since 2020. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, an contributing author for IPCC assessment reports, a coordinating lead authorship for National Climate Change Assessment Report of China, and an executive committee member of the National Association of Input-Output and Big Data of China. He is an Associate Editor or Editorial Board Member of several journals including Science Bulletin, Scientific Data, Advances in Applied Energy, etc.
 
Yuli has won a dozen academic prizes including the University of Birmingham Founders' Awards (2023), the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed PhD Students Abroad (2016), and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research Green Talents Award (2018). Yuli has been interviewed by renowned media outlets and invited to present his research at international conferences.

Research

Prof. Yuli Shan’s research focuses on accounting for carbon emissions, climate change economics, and sustainable development, with a special focus on developing countries and cities. He has published about 200 papers in high-impact journals, including 20+ in Nature and Science entitled journals. His papers have been cited over 22,000 times (h-index 68), and 33 of them are ESI highly cited papers and 20 are hot papers.

Yuli has co-founded an open emission dataset (CEADs.net) to provide the most up-to-date regional emission and energy data for emerging countries and subnational regions.
