Dr Sotirios Zartaloudis is Asscociate Professor in Comparative European Politics in the Department of Political Science and International Studies at University of Birmingham. Previously, he was Lecturer in Politics at Loughborough University and Lecturer in International Politics at Politics, University of Manchester.

Dr Sotirios Zartaloudis holds a PhD in European Studies and an MSc in European Politics and Governance from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a BA in Sociology from University of Crete, Greece.

He speaks Greek (native), English, French, and Portuguese (Basic).

He has an extensive teaching experience in comparative European politics and the European Union (history, institutions, policy-making and politics), British politics and international political economy (varieties of capitalism and welfare states) at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Besides his academic research, Dr Zartaloudis has been involved in policy making and impact by working as a research associate at the International think-tank Policy-Network. His work there informed UK’s Premier Gordon Brown on promoting social mobility in the UK.


Sotirios teaches comparative politics, political economy and methods. In particular, he teaches the following modules:

  • SD1D: Research Skills and Methods 
  • POLS 222: Europeanization 
  • POLS 344: Varieties of Capitalism and Welfare State Models 

Postgraduate supervision

Sotirios also welcomes applications for PhD research in Europeanization, comparative welfare states and public policy and EU politics and policy.
