Tony Whitehouse is Honorary Professor of Intensive Care Medicine in the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing and a Critical Care Consultant at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

He is lead for Clinical Critical Care Research in the UK’s largest ICU at the QE and Chief Investigator for the NIHR-funded STRESS-L study. He is local principal investigator for a number of national studies.

Biography

Tony is a clinical researcher with an interest in Infection and Microbiology in Critically Ill Patients. He has investigated Infection, Antibiotics, Sepsis and Septic Shock.

He is the Chief Investigator for the NIHR-funded STRESS-L study which is investigating the use of beta blockade in patients treated in ICU with septic shock.

He works with the Microbiology Department in the University of Birmingham (UoB) studying Bacteriophage, MDR E coli and MicroRNA dynamics in the gut microbiome and also the Department of Clinical Bioinformatics (also UoB) investigating the management of patients undergoing Oesophagectomy and having treatment with Albumin.

He is working with members of the Turing Institute to analyse treatments used during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research interests

Clinical Trials, Novel Statistical Analysis, Large Datasets, Antibiotics, Infection and Septic Shock in the ICU.

Current projects

Beta Blockers in the Critically Ill, Investigation of the Gut Microbiome in the Critically Ill, the effect of Penicillin Allergy on antibiotic use in the Critically Ill, Management of the Post-Oesophagectomy patient through the national Oesophago-Gastric Anastomosis Audit (OGAA).

Other activities

Since December 2019, he has been a member of the Trustee Board of the Intensive Care Society, the largest multi-professional intensive care membership organisation in the UK. He is a regular lecturer on the Final FRCA course run by the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

Publications
