Yu-Lung Chiu is a Professor of Physical Metallurgy in School of Metallurgy and Materials. His research often involves microstructural characterisation using electron microscopy techniques and also small-scale mechanical characterisation to understand the fundamental plasticity mechanisms in crystalline materials, which hopefully will be able to improve the understanding of the behaviour of advanced engineering alloys at macroscopic scales. He researches into advanced alloys with complex composition and microstructure for aerospace, nuclear and automotive applications, but sometimes also uses simple model alloy systems for mechanistic studies.

Biography

Professor Yu-Lung Chiu studied Metallurgy for his BE degree at Northeastern University (Shenyang, China) and went on to study for a PhD in Materials Science at the University of Hong Kong (China).

He spent a few years doing research and teaching at universities and research institutes in Hong Kong, France, Switzerland and New Zealand before his current employment at the University of Birmingham.
