Whether you’re a huge sports fan, an occasional spectator, or an athlete yourself, there are lots of opportunities in Birmingham for you.
Commonwealth Games 2022
In 2022, the
Commonwealth Games will open Birmingham up to the world. The city will be packed with exciting sporting events including Hockey, Gymnastics, Boxing and more; hosted in venues across Birmingham. The University of Birmingham will be hosting hockey and squash during the Games and we are extremely proud to be involved. There are already lots of different venues and arenas in the city and Birmingham comes with a huge population of sporting fans to fill them. But the city is being injected with investment to transform the city into a state-of-the-art sporting city, and to make Birmingham even more accessible - a cycleway is being created for Birmingham’s cyclists, creating a safe route for professional and casual cyclists to ride directly into the city centre.
Football
The city is home to Aston Villa and Birmingham City football clubs, both easily accessible from Birmingham New Street, and sporting a healthy rivalry. Just further afield, you can easily get to Black Country rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion. Both Villa and Wolves compete in the Premier League, with Birmingham and West Brom playing in the EFL Championship.
Tennis
Each year Birmingham welcomes The Aegon Classic tennis tournament which attracts world-class players from around the world to compete in both singles and doubles. This prestigious pre-Wimbledon women's tournament is held at the
Edgbaston Priory Club, only a stone's throw from the University.
Cricket
The
Edgbaston Cricket Ground is legendary and only a short walk from our campus. Whether you’re visiting for the love of the sport, or because you love dressing up and having a sing-a-long with a drink, Edgbaston is perfect if you like to spend your summer days enjoying a few hours of cricket.
Golf
Edgbaston Golf Club is conveniently located between our main campus and the city, hidden amidst a small forest of trees - a peaceful break from the bustle of the city. Or you may want to try your hand at
mini golf in our local Cannon Hill Park, where you can also boat across the lake in giant swan pedalos!
Get involved
There are plenty of sports clubs and activities across the city to get involved with, including Park Runs and local hockey, athletics, squash and football teams - plus many more. The city also hosts annual sporting events such as the
Great Birmingham Run and a range of other charity runs throughout the year.
On campus, the University has a huge range of
sports teams you can join - whatever your ability. Our state-of-the-art
Sport & Fitness Centre is a pioneering sports centre for students, staff and local community, with the city’s only 50m-length swimming pool, a 250-station gym and a huge variety of classes. Whatever you're interested in, there is something here for you.
