Seeing through the body: Shedding light on seeing beyond the naked eye

Colour and intensity of light depends on the medium through which it is travelling. Professor Hamid Dehghani will describe how we can shine light into the human body and measure its changing colour and intensity to detect and monitor diseases.

Professor Hamid Dehghani is a Birmingham Hero and Professor of Medical Imaging at the School of Computer Science and the Healthcare Technologies Institute (HTI). His research focusses on non-invasive imaging and measurement of physiological information from biological tissue. Professor Dehghani's research sits within the Centre for Human Brain Health, where he is developing greater insight into the brain.

BitMap (Brain injury and trauma monitoring using advanced photonics), led by Professor Dehghani, is an innovative new Horizon 2020-funded project, which is developing a suite of light based non-invasive devices that can provide essential information about brain health.

The project aims to improve the treatment and care of those suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) and neonates with brain injury from pregnancy or birthing complications. The project is also motivated by the clinical evidence that such devices would lead to significantly improved healthcare and reduced socioeconomic impact.

Complimentary alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be served at the drinks reception following the event. Alcoholic drinks will be only be served to those who are aged 18 or over.
