Why did you choose the University of Birmingham?

I made Birmingham my firm choice primarily because of the wide range of support offered. Having had a limited background in Computer Science prior to joining my course, I knew I needed to get all the support I could get my hands on. The University provided me with specialist tutorial sessions in programming in addition to a dedicated module which allowed me to grasp the basic concepts of Computer Science. Students are also offered timetabled lab sessions where second and third year undergraduates offer support and guidance on assignments. Lecturers also have weekly office hours where students are encouraged  to question any aspects of the module to clarify understanding. Students are also assigned personal tutors for the duration of the course. I believe the support offered at Birmingham is second to none and has made my transition to university a very smooth one.

How have you enjoyed your time so far?

The course is designed to provide you with a thorough coverage of all core aspects of computer science, equipping you with all the necessary skills to enter industry. The University offers a wide range of core modules across two years, giving a deep insight into the multiple fields of computer science. In the third year, students are able to pursue their interests in specific optional modules. I feel the course has the optimum balance between theory and application. While we are able to learn the theory, we are also able to put this into practice in the form of practice exercises and assignments.

What is your favourite part of your course?

Personally, I particularly enjoyed the application aspects of the course. This included our Artificial Intelligence assignment which involved us building and programming a LEGO robot to perform the tasks of a Minesweeper such as doing a complete sweep of the environment, detecting danger zones/buried mines and the disposal of surface mines. This involved the use of equipment such as colour sensors, ultrasonic sensors, infrared sensors and motors. Not only was the process exciting, but it helped me appreciate how the theory learned in lectures is being used in real world applications.

Tell us how your experience has been so far at Birmingham…

So far I’ve had an incredible experience at Birmingham, all the students and lecturers are very friendly and share the same enthusiasm. Each and every one of the lectures are very interesting, which continues to fuel my interest. The School itself has virtually everything a computer science student would ever need. From 24/7 access to exclusive computing labs to our very own vending machines, the school caters for all our needs. Joining Birmingham’s School of Computer Science has been one of the best decisions I’ve made!
