Dr Liam Kelleher

ECDN Rep for the School of GEES

What is your academic background and your current research field?

I have a background in physics, where I have developed spectroscopy tools and analysis algorithms for industry and biomedical processes. Specifically, I focus on Raman spectroscopy and machine learning, where I know work as a research fellow in GEES and the IGI. Here I work on novel microplastic and pollutant detection and characterisation.

What is your role as a ECDN Rep and how can postdocs in your school contact you?

As a rep I want to promote the activities and support available for researchers thanks to the events run by ECDN. I am happy to be contacted by email (l.kelleher@bham.ac.uk) to answer any questions or to arrange a call for further discussions. You can also find me on Twitter @adventuringliam. I am happy to help in any way I can or to refer you to someone that can.

What do you feel are the benefits of the ECDN programme for postdocs and what do you feel have been the benefits to you from being a postdoc rep?

The programme offers significant support for personal development, to learn more about academia and to develop your own skills. I have attended many courses as a new postdoc and have found them to be hugely beneficial. In addition to this, it is very easy to contact other researchers and facilitators to have further discussions. The rep role has allowed me to expand my experience, provide input into the programme and to support other postdocs.
