The College of Medical and Dental Sciences is an integral part of Birmingham Health Partners (BHP), a collaborative platform between the University, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust to improve the lives of patients locally, nationally and globally.
The co-location of the partners allows BHP to deliver an integrated approach to research and healthcare innovation; working together to shape the future of healthcare to benefit our communities and change lives.
In addition to the NHS Trusts in our immediate vicinity, the College works closely with many of the teaching hospitals, clinical commissioning groups and training practices across the West Midlands.
Our research is supported by peer-reviewed multi-million-pound funding from a broad range of funders, including UK Research and Innovation, medical research charities such as Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK, Blood Cancer UK, Versus Arthritis and the British Heart Foundation as well as the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
Our flagship infrastructure includes:
Working with industry
Birmingham is recognised across life and environmental sciences and healthcare innovation as a global leader, translating science into societal advancements. Through strong partnerships that link pioneering academic excellence with clinical and industry innovation, we address the challenges facing society today and those of the future global population. We do this by working collaboratively with a broad range of businesses, government departments, research councils and governing bodies.
The College has also nurtured a number of spin out companies developed by our academic community, for example:
- The Binding Site was founded by researchers at the University and continues to be an important part of our research endeavours, playing a vital role in the development of an accurate, CE marked antibody detection test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
- International pharmaceutical giant Bayer has invested in a multi-million-pound childhood cancer trial that will be delivered through our Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit.
The Birmingham Health Innovation Campus, due to open in late 2023, will harness world-leading academic and clinical strengths while bringing new commercial power to the region to accelerate life sciences research, taking innovative new healthcare treatments and technologies from early development to real life application.
