About outreach and widening participation in MDS

Male nursing student looking male secondary school students

The College of Medical and Dental Sciences Outreach and Widening Participation team aims to create opportunities for students from groups currently under-represented in higher education, in healthcare professions and in biomedical research to learn about university and life as a student, and then to support these students to access university and as they progress through their studies and into their careers.

Dr Clare Ray, College Lead for Outreach and Widening Participation and Tom Syder, College Outreach, Equality and Diversity Officer work closely with colleagues from the University of Birmingham Outreach Office, Careers Network and across the undergraduate programmes in the College of Medical and Dental Sciences and with our students who are members of the Birmingham Widening Access to Medical Sciences (BWAMS) society to organise events and activities for students in the West Midlands to support them in applying to and accessing university.

We will provide ad hoc activities on request from schools and colleges, and our activities range from the Health Big Quiz for Y8 students through to Pathways to Birmingham widening participation programmes for Y12 and 13 students. We are committed to supporting all of our students to reach their own potential and we continue to support students who participated in Pathways to Birmingham with our own MDS Pathways peer mentoring and professional development programme for first year students. We are continually working to support students to develop their personal and professional networks and ensure they are able to progress onto their careers and roles of choice after graduation.
