Academic insights: the value of embedding Graduate Attributes into our teaching

In this microCPD Dr Ruth Page (Reader in Applied Linguistics, School of English, Drama and Creative Studies) and Dr Sophie Cox (Associate Professor Healthcare Technological, School of Chemical Engineering) discuss ways in which they have embedded the University’s Graduate Attributes into their teaching practice. They discuss how they have helped their students to develop as Global and Local Leaders.

In the Department of English Language and Linguistics, Ruth embedded this Attribute in a research methods module where students work in groups to solve real-world problems set by employers. The students learn to think creatively and to act inclusively, especially through design based thinking activities that help them understand the various needs of the people who will use their research outside the University. The module is assessed with a business report and a digital presentation, which equips the students to enter the workplace with confidence and with examples of how their learning has made a difference in the world.

In Chemical Engineering, Sophie has embedded Graduate Attributes in her teaching through tasking students in small groups to develop innovative solutions for cutting-edge technical challenges supported by engagement with research active demonstrators. The module assessments are designed to encourage students to consider the impact of their solutions from different perspectives while also reflecting on the journey their projects take and their role within the team. Supporting students to develop this reflective mindset has helped them develop leadership qualities while also providing a formalised example for job interviews. Sophie has also found that by engaging students with research-led challenges this enables them to develop their problem solving skills and creativity, which feeds into the Future Minded graduate attribute.
