International Business MSc (Singapore)

The Business School has been delivering management education in Singapore since 1994, when its MBA programme was originally launched.  The MSc International Business further extends these activities in Singapore and is delivered in conjunction with our partners, the Singapore Institute of Management.

We use fundamentally the same syllabus as taught on the International Business MSc programme in the UK and the same team of Business School academic staff travels to Singapore in order to deliver all of the modules.

For graduates wishing to develop a career in international business, a wide range of opportunities exists. The programme draws on the talents of internationally respected scholars and highly respected teachers whose expertise covers globalisation, the international aspects of strategic management, accounting and finance, corporate governance, e-commerce, global talent management, marketing, organisation of multinational corporations, operations and procurement and cross cultural communication.

Business today is global and no company can be confident of surviving unless it appreciates this fact and understands its implications.

Multinational corporations are very short of managers from countries other than their domestic base, who have the understanding to operate comfortably in different countries.

Small and medium-sized firms with strong niche positions are also increasingly looking for talented and well-trained staff to help them undertake international expansion. In major emerging economies such as Brazil, China and India, successful domestic firms are poised to become multinational through expanding overseas. They too welcome graduates with the appropriate knowledge about doing business internationally.

The MSc International Business has been accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). The accreditation, aimed at Pre-Experience Masters in General Management (PEMM), takes into account criteria such as the breadth of the syllabus, the quality of teaching staff, careers support available and the inclusion of a research dissertation. This accreditation aims to safeguard standards of excellence and ensure clarity about the purpose of various general management qualifications in an increasing market.

Fees and funding

Fees for 2016/17: S$26,964 (inclusive of 7% GST). This sum is payable in two installments of S$13,482 before the start of each semester, (in April and October). Please check with SIM for the latest fees information.

International students can often gain funding through overseas research scholarships, Commonwealth scholarships or their home government; find out more.

Entry requirements

At least an upper second-class degree or postgraduate diploma from a UK university or equivalent.

No exemptions will be granted. Applicants may be required to be interviewed.

English Proficiency Requirements:

  • Language at ‘O’ Level; or
  • TOEFL iBT – 88 overall with no less than 21 in Reading, 20 in Listening, 22 in Speaking, 21 in Writing; or
  • IELTS 6.5 overall (with at least 6.0 in each band); or
  • Pearson Test in English (Academic) with 59 in all four skills

1. By the application closing date, you must have attained the minimum qualification required for the programme. 

2. Degree transcripts and certificates can be scanned copies - please do not send photographed copies of your documents.

3. Singapore residents should bring ORIGINAL documents for verification at SIM’s Student Recruitment Centre, Level 2 within 7 days of submitting their -application, or by the closing date, whichever is earlier.

If you are living outside Singapore, you should take the original documentation with you when you register with SIM for the orientation programme, immediately prior to the commencement of your degree.

To complete your application, you will need scanned copies of the following documents:

a) A photograph:

i) taken within the last 3 months;

ii) showing the full face and without headgear (headgear worn in accordance with religious or racial customs is acceptable but must not hide the facial features);

iii) between 25mm and 35mm from chin to crown and 35mm wide by 45mm high without border preferred dimension of the photo image is 400 by 514 pixels..

iv) in JPEG format;

v) with a file size around 60 Kbytes

b) Your identification documents, i.e. NRIC or FIN/Passport and Birth Certificate (for international applicants).

c) All your educational certificates and transcripts (including your ‘O’ and ‘A’ level certificates, TOEFL, Pearson or IELTS documents etc).  Translated and notarised copies of the documents are required if they are not in the English language.

d) A fully completed application form with two references, one of which must be academic related.

e) A letter expressing your academic interest and your objectives in undertaking post graduate study.

Please save and scan the various pages of a similar document type in one file. For example, if your Diploma transcript has 3 pages, scan all 3 pages into one file. All copies of documents should be reduced to A4 size.

Applications with incomplete, inaccurate information and not accompanied by supporting documents will NOT be processed or considered.

The application fee for international students is S$321-00 and applicants should also include with their application documents, a cheque or demand draft for this amount or alternatively make arrangements for telegraphic transfer of funds.

Application Outcome

All applicants will be informed of their application outcome in writing via applicants’ email and SIM applicant portal at least one month before course commencement. Verbal offers of

admission will not be made. The Programme Director selects students for admission into the programme based on individual merits. Possession of one or more of the qualifications listed does not guarantee automatic entry to the programme.  Successful applicants will be required to confirm their acceptance of a place on the programme in writing, prior to the issuance of a letter of unconditional acceptance.

The university reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission and cancel the enrolment of any person where such an offer was made on the basis of incomplete or inaccurate information supplied by the applicant or a certifying authority.

Once accepted onto the programme, international applicants should also submit a Student’s Pass application form which will be sent by SIM or one of its agents.  Your Student’s Pass application is subject to Singapore Immigration & Checkpoints Authority’s approval.

Modules are delivered in week long blocks of 30 hours from mid October to early February and then from early May through until mid August.  The dissertation is completed in two distinct periods at the end of each teaching block.  Students are expected to be in attendance at SIM during term time, even when there is no teaching. 

Taught modules contribute towards two thirds of your final assessment. The dissertation contributes one third. Modules are assessed using written examinations or coursework. Coursework can take a variety of forms, including reports, essays, group presentations and practical assignments. Some coursework is group based.

Careers and Development

Graduates may find themselves taking a major step towards developing an international or strategic focus within their careers. While some will accelerate their careers with existing employers, others can create potential for change. Major directions include jobs in business analysis and development, banking, management and strategy consulting, corporate finance and investment, human resource management and marketing. Alumni can access career support and take advantage of a range of networking and development opportunities. Postgraduate alumni can also access a bespoke service from the Careers in Business service.

In September 2015, the first local career and personal development event took take place, at SIM during the day and then moved to the Singapore Riverboat for the evening session including dinner.  All students received feedback on their Emergenetic Profile, advice on a wide range of issues relating to international recruiters and their requirements and were given the chance in the evening, to network with start-up entrepreneurs, angel investors and other business professionals.

This event is now held on an annual basis with a variety of different evening venues planned.  Our consultant, Joanna Yeoh, will also put on a half day event every March to cover cv writing and enhancing your personal profile.  In the meantime, she is now contracted to offer one to one counselling, particularly where international students aspire to secure employment in Singapore.
