The University is home to England’s first hydrogen gas fuelling station and has its own fleet of hydrogen powered cars.
The station has been specially designed to meet the fuelling needs of the first hydrogen vehicles to appear on the roads. The fueller comprises an integrated compression, hydrogen storage and dispensing system. It is optimised to fuel six vehicles per day. The cars are pollution free, virtually silent in operation, can travel up to 100 miles on a full tank of hydrogen and achieve speeds of up to 50 miles per hour.

Birmingham engineers are comparing five hydrogen powered vehicles with the University’s fleet of petrol, diesel and electric vehicles in order to learn more about their efficiency and performance. The research will determine how the vehicles need to be adapted to make hydrogen an attractive and cost effective option as a future fuel.
