The Birmingham Business School and Department of Economics at the University of Birmingham is pleased to announce the 1st Climate Change, Urban Challenges, Renewable Energy, and Extreme Events Workshop (CRUEE), to be held at the University of Birmingham's state-of-the-art campus in Dubai on 13-14 December 2023.

This conference aims to bring together researchers, young scholars, post-doctoral researchers, and PhD students actively engaged in the fields of Environmental Economics, Urban Economics, Energy and Disaster Economics. We are proud to host this conference immediately after the conclusion of COP28, scheduled to take place from November 30th to December 12th in Dubai, UAE.

Confirmed speakers include researchers from the IMF, University of Birmingham (UK) and NYU Abu Dhabi.  We encourage local and international researchers to apply to submit a paper or to just to attend.

Objective

The CRUEE Conference endeavours to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among researchers working on crucial aspects of climate change, urban challenges, renewable energy, and extreme events. By bringing together leading experts and emerging scholars, the workshop aims to generate innovative ideas, address pressing challenges, and explore sustainable solutions to global environmental concerns.  The conference will include keynote talks and parallel sessions chaired by the organisers and confirmed speakers. 

Topics of interest

We welcome original unpublished research papers focusing on, but not limited to, the following topics:

  9. Socio-economic Aspects of Environmental Transitions
  10. Assessing Environmental Risks and Uncertainties

Keynote speaker

We are delighted to announce Chris Papageorgiou, Chief of the Macroeconomics Division in the Research Department at the International Monetary Fund, as our distinguished keynote speaker. With extensive expertise in macroeconomics and climate-related research, Chris's insights will provide valuable perspectives on the intersection of economic policies and environmental sustainability.

Registration

To participate in the CRUEE Conference, attendees are required to register online. The registration fee is 100 GBP and includes access to all sessions, coffee breaks, lunch, and conference materials.

Submission guidelines

Researchers interested in presenting their work at the conference are invited to submit extended abstracts or full papers by 8 November 2023. All submissions will undergo a rigorous peer review process, and accepted authors will be notified by 14 November 2023. Please email your paper or abstract to Nikos Fatouros at n.fatouros@bham.ac.uk
