Altin GjetaThe Peace to Statehood Conundrum: Investigating Multiethnic Statebuilding in Kosovo

Supervisors: Laurence Cooley and George Kyris

Altin is looking at consociational power-sharing arrangements efficacy to transition post-conflict ethnically divided societies to consolidated statehood. Most studies on consociational power-sharing analyse the transition towards peace and democracy in post-conflict societies, so they neglect to fully explore the relationship between power-sharing mechanisms and the issue of stateness in ethnically divided polities. While scholars concerned with the statehood studies have focused their attention in state failure, legitimacy, state and non-state actors in areas of limited statehood, the capacity of state to provide services and goods, and to enter in international relations. Contrary, my research project is concerned with the relationship between power sharing institutions and statehood’s conception as the ability of the state to exert authority and implement policies in its territory. Consociational power-sharing and statehood are my theoretical frameworks, while I am investigating multiethnic statebuilding policy in Kosovo as a case study, using qualitative and process tracing methods.
