Law student perspective: Neda Mahmoodi

We spoke to LLB for Graduates student Neda from Canada, about why she chose Birmingham Law School for her studies and her experience so far

a portrait of Law student Neda Mahmoodi"After completing my undergraduate degree in Canada, I decided that studying law abroad would provide me with an international world view of legal studies. More specifically, I chose the University of Birmingham because it is a world-renowned university known for its large international student community. I knew I would feel supported here because I had spoken to a few friends who had already gone to this University.

The University provided me with all the information I needed prior to arriving in the UK which made the move to the UK a lot smoother. The International Student Team gave me individualized advice on how to successfully apply for a student visa, which itself was quite a trying albeit rewarding process. It was quite a relief knowing that the team was readily available to answer all of my questions and concerns and did so happily.

The law program at the University of Birmingham is quite unique in that students are offered several opportunities to put their knowledge into practice in a highly supportive environment. As a tight-knit group we constantly challenge one another to aim higher and grow as aspiring lawyers. An integral part in this process is the Centre for Professional Legal Education and Research (CEPLER). CEPLER provides students with the materials and resources needed to successfully reach both our career and personal goals. Opportunities include, but are certainly not limited to, mooting, advocacy, and pro bono to name a few. I am currently in the process of applying to be a part of the Pro Bono Group. The application process has been quite pleasurable, and I look forward to getting more involved this upcoming semester.

Moreover, the LLB for Graduates program is great because even though it’s an accelerated program, we have quite a few course options to choose from in our second year which gives students the chance to dabble in various specialisations. Importantly for Canadian students, the University of Birmingham offers a course on the Canadian Constitution which is helpful when writing the NCAs and/or undertaking an LLM in Canada afterwards.

Birmingham has a unique and rich culture whilst also being a metropolitan city that is very diverse, I found this very interesting. Also, its central location makes it easier to travel around the UK and Europe which is incredible for someone who lives across the pond.

Initially, I planned on moving back to Canada and completing my LLM. However, I’ve grown to love Birmingham and the UK in general and have decided to apply to pupillages to put my legal knowledge into practice and hopefully become a successful barrister. The Law School and its incredibly supportive staff have helped me keep my options open and provided me with several opportunities to connect with alumni to further prepare myself and get a sense of what lies ahead.

It is an opportunity of a lifetime. I would advise prospective students to not be afraid to take the leap as it has proven to be a rewarding experience. It is okay to be afraid of the unknown, but you must overcome the hurdles to achieve prosperity. University of Birmingham’s welcoming and accommodating environment makes us international students feel at home."
