Dr Shiyang Tang received his BEng (1st class honours) in Electrical Engineering and PhD in Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) from RMIT University, Australia, in 2012 and 2015, respectively. He went to the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to conduct his postdoctoral research in bio-microfluidics. From 2017 to 2020, he was the Vice-Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He was the recipient of the 2020 Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) from the Australian Research Council. Dr Tang joined the University of Birmingham, UK, as a lecturer in early 2020.
Dr Tang's research group, Soft Intelligent Systems Group, conduct research on intelligent microfluidics and smart materials enabled electromechanical platforms. He has published more than 100 papers and many of them are in high-impact journals, including PNAS, Nature Communications, Matter, Science Advance, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Advanced Science, Small, Analytical Chemistry, and Lab on a Chip.
