US Alumni Bonfire Night Zoom Event
17:00 PST | 19:00 CST | 20:00 EST Friday 5 November 2021
Lawrence of Arabia
Presented by University of Birmingham alumnus Chris Lardge (BSc Chemical Engineering 1965, PhD ChE 1968)
Join US based alumni for a special bonfire night get-together and talk from Birmingham graduate Chris Lardge (BSc Chemical Engineering 1965, PhD ChE 1968). Chris will discuss the fascinating life of Lawrence of Arabia.
The event will take place at 17:00 PST | 19:00 CST | 20:00 EST on Friday 5 November on Zoom. There will be 10 minutes open chat at the start of the event followed by Chris's presentation and questions.
Chris says: 'Many alums must have seen the 1962 movie Lawrence of Arabia starring Peter O’ Toole. I first saw it in Birmingham when I was an undergrad and lastly this year on PBS. Despite its length and content, it only covers one to two years of his life and his death in a motorcycle accident. The real story of Lawrence is even more interesting than the movie.
'For example, Lawrence wasn’t his real name and he went by at least two other surnames during his life. Besides the British officer that was portrayed in the movie he was also an author, a linguist, an archaeologist, a spy and a mechanic.
'There hasn’t anyone before or since quite like him.'
