Antimicrobial Resistance Webinar
Professor Willem van Schaik, Director of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection
Wednesday 21 February | 08:00 EST | 13:00 GMT | 14:00 CET
Learn about how world-leading research in Birmingham is tackling urgent global health threats with University of Birmingham's Professor Willem van Schaik, Director of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection.
As the Director of the Institute of Microbiology and Infection (IMI), Willem's work covers a wide range of disciplines, from the basics of how microbes live to how we can treat and prevent infectious diseases. The IMI is part of the biggest community of academic microbiologists in the UK, and the team's contributions to research put Birmingham among the global leaders of this vital reserach. The talk will focus on the phenomenon called antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Microbes are evolving to withstand the actions of antibiotics, meaning we could face a world where routine surgery carries huge risks. To prevent this silent pandemic, Willem will discuss the exciting potential for a new class of antibiotics that can kill drug resistant bacteria
