Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at UoB Dubai?
I have always wanted to study Engineering, and to become more involved in solving many of the problems facing the Middle East as well as the world. My dream is to be involved in solving the climate crisis facing the world before it is too late, and studying Mechanical Engineering in Birmingham, one of the world’s most prestigious universities, is a crucial step for me towards achieving this dream.
What was your experience like at UoB Dubai?
My experience was extremely positive. The campus and cohort, although small, was very helpful in enabling me to get to know almost all students on a much deeper level than if the campus had been larger.
What inspired you to move to the UAE for your education?
Moving to the UAE did have its challenges, but having lived all my life in Egypt there was not much of a language or culture barrier. The plentiful options for student accommodation enabled me to settle in fairly quickly and start making friends as well as focus on my studies.
How have you found the transition to study at the UK campus?
The transition to the UK came with its own set of challenges: culture, weather, and overall lifestyle. With a bit more work than I otherwise would have done (if I had continued in the Dubai campus), I was able to overcome most of these challenges. Travelling to study at the Edgbaston campus with a friend from the Dubai campus helped me to settle in relatively easily. I was aware of some of the challenges I would face, but I knew that I wanted to get to experience the UK and gain experiences and memories that will hopefully last a lifetime!
What’s your highlight of your time at the University so far?
Definitely seeing the campus for the first time. The red-brick university campus was mesmerising. I took a tour through the campus, taking pictures at every corner and I remember feeling that I was on a film set.
What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?
Do not neglect your studies. It can seem overwhelming at start, but if you set some time each day for studying, you will find yourself doing very well. However, I would say that the most important piece of advice that has ever been given to me was: enjoy yourself. Make sure you take time off and focus on your social life and have fun with the journey.
