Abstract
Establishing a dynamic career in construction and engineering management can be highly advantageous and equally demanding for engineering professionals. The transition to general management or senior specialist roles can be particularly challenging to navigate.
At the University of Birmingham Dubai, our focus is on training and developing successful engineers, preparing them for rewarding careers in a diverse range of industries. Drawing from real-world experiences and insights shared by our distinguished academics, we are hosting an exclusive masterclass that defines the journey from an ‘engineer’ to a ‘leader in the sector’, driving innovation and implementing positive changes.
Leading this masterclass is Dr Seyed Ghaffar, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and Programme Director. The masterclass is open to engineering professionals and graduates who aspire to advance their careers in Engineering. From industry best practices and key trends, the masterclass will cover a wide range of topics, providing a systematic and advanced level of subject-specific knowledge on building a promising career in engineering.
This event will be hosted on 9th December, from 12:00-13:00 at our smart campus, inaugurated by HH Sheikh Hamdan. The session will also be streamed online. An online event link will be shared with attendees upon registration.

Meet the expert
Dr Seyed Ghaffar
Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and Programme Director
Dr. Seyed Ghaffar is an Associate Professor in Civil Engineering and a Chartered Civil Engineer. He is also a Fellow member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (CEng, FICE), a Member of the Institute of Concrete Technology (MICT), and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
Prior to joining the University of Birmingham, Dr. Ghaffar held the position of Associate Professor (Reader) in Civil Engineering at Brunel University London from 2017 to 2023. This is where he completed his Civil Engineering with Sustainability degree in 2012 and earned his Ph.D. in Sustainable Engineering Materials in 2016, fully sponsored by the Industrial Cooperative Awards in Science & Technology.
Over the years, he has taken on various academic roles, including Industrial Placement Coordinator, Admissions Tutor, and Senior Tutor for the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
