This session will explore why the ground can be considered a major hazard for any Civil Engineering works, and why through understanding of key characteristics many of the problems we see across the world can be avoid. In this session a brief review of the cornerstone fundamental aspect of how we need to understand a soil will be presented and how this controls its response under load. Through this it will be demonstrating why interactions with water are so fundamental. This session will highlight some key aspects which are developed in much more detail on the MSc Civil Engineering programme we are offering at the University of Birmingham Dubai.
