Marking their importance: Needlework samplers and the role of Black women in the Anglican mission in Sierra Leone 1804-1840s

Location
Cadbury Research Library
Dates
Tuesday 21 October 2025 (17:30-18:30)

The Cadbury Research Library  are delighted to welcome Silke Strickrodt to this session to present and facilitate a unique viewing of original needlework samplers.

"Black women made a significant contribution to the development of the Church Missionary Society’s mission in West Africa, but they rarely appear in missionary records or the historiography. However, a unique collection of needlework samplers held by the Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham provides material traces of their work as pupils and teachers in the CMS schools. Following the thread of these samplers, I will explore the experiences of African American and Euro-African women in this contact zone."

Open to staff students and members of the public.
