Sleep Medicine and Research at the São Paulo Sleep Institute – Overview of Epidemiological Data and Discussion of Possible Partnerships
The Sleep Institute and the Department of Psychobiology at the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP, Brazil) are among the most reputable sleep research centres worldwide, both based in the amount and the relevance of the articles published. Based on a facility with more than 80 polysomnography (PSG) beds and counting on a multidisciplinary clinical and research team, we have been able to set the Sleep Institute as a local reference on the field, unifying research and clinical practice in a fruitful way. As one of our biggest accomplishments, every decade since 1987 a new edition of the São Paulo Epidemiologic Sleep Study (EPISONO) takes place. As of today, we have performed four editions of EPISONO (1987, 1995, 2007 and 2019) and one follow up assessment (2015, reassessing data from 2007). All these editions included about 1000 individuals each, randomly selected in order to compose a representative sample of the city of São Paulo. Additionally, since the 2007 edition, all volunteers are subjected to polysomnography and a whole set of additional tests to compose the clinical profile of the participants. With these studies, our main aim is to evaluate the epidemiology and describe the prevalence of sleep disorders and complaints in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. As of today, more than 80 articles have been published based on EPISONO, but our databases still hold an unexplored potential for both clinical and research purposes (especially regarding the 2019 edition, for which data is about to be released). We would be glad to expand our research and explore the potential of our data by means of a partnership with researchers and clinical staff from the University of Birmingham. The current seminar intends to present and discuss the history, structure and research efforts of the Sleep Institute, focusing on our epidemiological studies. Based on that, we plan to be able to establish new initiatives for epidemiological, clinical and preclinical sleep studies, based on a collaboration between fellows from the Sleep Institute, UNIFESP and the University of Birmingham.
