The University of Birmingham is celebrating the opening of the ‘Green Heart’.

The Green Heart is the name given to the space which has been redesigned to open up the University of Birmingham campus in the way that the Founders imagined it would be, when the University was founded in 1900 - with views from one end of the campus down to Old Joe – the clock tower that can be seen from far and wide.

The redevelopment has been the result of over 2 years’ work, and the Green Heart is now in use every day.

Put a date in your 2019 diaries to join us for the Green Heart Festival.

What's on?

A year long celebration of the Green Heart, launching with a free weekend of family fun.

Saturday 8 June

Green Heart Family Festival

1:00pm - 5:00pm

A variety of fascinating and hands-on exhibits will highlight the recent research of the University such as black holes and gravitational waves, together with music and dance – all outdoors of course!

The Green Heart ‘Prom’

6:00pm - 10:30pm

Music and singing from the University of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, our talented Festival Voices, and distinguished Solo Performances. Playing some recognised pieces for rousing audience participation, with a spectacular fireworks finale, we are all set to ‘raise the roof’!

Sunday 9th June

From 1:30pm

CBSO on stage 7:00pm - 8:00pm

The University of Birmingham is delighted to welcome the CBSO Song Festival to the Green Heart Festival Launch Weekend.

Featuring:

  • Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla – Conductor
  • Simon Halsey – CBSO Chorus Director
  • CBSO Chorus

For CBSO Conductor, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla the Baltic Song Festivals have been a formative musical experience: now, together with the CBSO and their whole family of choirs, plus guest choirs drawn from throughout the region, we are delighted that the CBSO Song Festival will form a key part of our Green Heart Festival Launch Weekend. And everyone can take part! Find out how your choir can participate.

A full range of street food and drink will be on offer throughout the weekend.

We do hope you will be able to attend the event. Please help spread the word, bring your family and friends and come back onto campus on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June 2019.
