TENNIS FESTIVAL

Includes buffet lunch and optional bus tour of iconic tennis venues at 2.15pm (bus tour lasts approximately 1 hour 15 minutes)

Join us for a fascinating and enjoyable day of tennis-related talks linked to last year’s exciting exhibition Court on Canvas: Tennis in Art. There’ll also be an object-handling session and a delicious tennis party-inspired buffet lunch. The Barber’s Tennis Festival will highlight how the game inspired artists, and will also explore the rich history of local tennis clubs, including Edgbaston Priory Club and Edgbaston Archery and Lawn Tennis Society – themselves a stone’s throw from the Barber Institute and where the game was pioneered, in the garden of a Victorian villa in Ampton Road.

Highlights of the day will include:

• Dr Jennifer Melville (Lead Curator of Art, Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum) will talk about the Barber’s new acquisition, Arthur Melville’s watercolour The Lawn Tennis Party at Marcus, 1889

Court on Canvas curator Prof Ann Sumner will discuss artist Charles March Gere (1869-1957), who painted The Tennis Party, currently on display at the Barber

• Tennis historian Bob Holland will lead an object-handling session and will also talk about the history of tennis clubs in the West Midlands
