Controlling the Cell Cycle - Humphreys Lecture 2013

Paul Nurse is a geneticist who works on mechanisms controlling cell division and cell shape. He was Professor of Microbiology at the University of Oxford, CEO of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and Cancer Research UK and President of Rockefeller University, New York. He is currently Director and Chief Executive of the Francis Crick Institute and President of the Royal Society. He was honoured with a knighthood for services to cancer research and cell biology in 1999, awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2001 and the Royal Society Copley Medal in 2005. His research focuses on regulators of cell division and cell shape in yeast. Which led to the identification of cyclin-dependent kinases as the key molecular determinants controlling the process by which cells make copies of themselves, a discovery that is important for understanding growth, development and cancer.
