Designing our world with materials science - from atoms to nuclear power plants (Years 12 and 13)

Attendee requirements: Attendees should ideally be studying one of A level Physics, Chemistry or Maths 

About: This masterclass will start by discussing atomic arrangements in metals and students will have the opportunity to build styrofoam models to visualise different structures. Students will test physical properties with  provided materials. This will be related to larger scales by showing some microstructures and comparing them to their physical properties.

Later in the session students will be introduced to the effects of temperature and visualise the concept of damage introduced by particle irradiation. The aim of this hands-on masterclass is to give students an insight into the full scale of materials design for a range of relatable applications in our world.

Additional information: Schools will be limited to 10 places for this class. Individual bookings can be made by students in Years 12 and 13.
