A Gift to Birmingham showcases photographic documentation of migrant communities in Birmingham, taken by renowned photographer Vanley Burke, in collaboration with Migrant Voice and University of Birmingham.

The photographs feature members of Migrant Voice in their homes and workplaces, in autumn 2021. Participants were also asked about interviewed by Giada Costantini, a PhD student in the University’s School of Education, on their personal experience of migrating to Birmingham, as a superdiverse city.

Vanley Burke’s A Gift to Birmingham launched at Ikon Gallery in March 2022 and has since toured to community venues in Aston, Handsworth and Smethwick. It was commissioned as part of a research project led by Dr Reza Gholami, Deputy Director of the Centre for Research in Race and Education, University of Birmingham.

This event is presented as part of A Place to Call Homea new public programme of exhibitions, activities and events exploring what home means to all of us.
