The Sketchbook and the Collider

12 March - 4 May 2018

Through the interaction between the worlds of the particle physicist and the artist, The Sketchbook and the Collider explores a new non-representational visual language for the study of particle physics. Simultaneously employing a rigorous adherence to scientific principles of investigation, the artist creates a dynamic space outside of the usual language of science but beyond a simple illustration of the processes underpinning particle physics. This space creates its own continuum between the two disciplines, bridging rigid definitions of what is considered art or science and allowing for the possibility of new ideas and understandings of the complex and fascinating hidden world around us.

Materiality is central to both the underlying concept as well as the physical realisation of this exhibition. This incorporates the dual meanings of the term material, as something composed of matter as well as referring to the physical quality of a particular thing. The artist’s interest in the material culture of the scientific world of physics as well as the culture of his own artistic discipline are referenced throughout and each element of the ‘making process’ is loaded with significance and meaning.
