Dr Simon Pemberton

Reader in Human Geography, Keele University

Dr Simon Pemberton is a Reader in Human Geography at Keele University and Honorary Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for Research into Superdiversity (IRiS) at the University of Birmingham. He has over 15 years of experience in respect of working with migrant communities and was formerly Head of the Merseyside Social Inclusion Observatory (MSIO) at the University of Liverpool between 2004 and 2010.

Simon has particular interests in the interaction between space, place, and welfare services and has published extensively on the impacts of migration from the EU8 accession countries since 2004. His main areas of specialism include the policies, politics and impacts of new immigration; the scaling of governance and policy responses for superdiverse communities; and new forms of neighbourhood planning for superdiverse communities.

Recent work has included leading a review of the links between poverty and economic migration for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and exploring the economic and social impact of the UK's 'migrant cap' on non-EU workers. In the context of the EU Norface project, Simon has responsibility for the UK case study, including interviews and policy analysis.
