Using Enabling Practice with Autistic Adults and Young People

This module aims to provide knowledge of approaches for the support, education and empowerment of autistic adults. It will address the barriers autistic adults experience in daily life and their fundamental needs, based on current research and theoretical understandings. It will explore the way models of support for autistic adults can identify and respond to these needs through the provision of appropriate and personalised educational and support programmes in a variety of settings.

This module will give you 20 credits at Postgraduate Masters Level/Level 7.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate awareness of the kinds of setting, conditions and support that are likely to promote social, emotional and physical well-being in autistic adults at different stages of adulthood
  • understand the importance of autistic perspectives in all areas of practice and theory and be aware of the potential tensions that may arise between those diagnosed on the autism spectrum and those in a supporting role
  • understand some of the principles underpinning programme design and support planning in international and national models and relate these to the provision of an effective service for autistic adults
  • critically appraise the current evidence base and identify gaps and limitations which could be addressed by future research.


You will be assessed through a range of work, enabling you to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and understanding of the theory and practical application of the module material. 

You will have one specific formative assessment (where you receive informal feedback, but it does not count towards your module grade) and two components of summative assessment (which are each graded).
