Promoting the Zibaldone in English

The seven-year Zibaldone project has reached its primary objective. The first complete translation of Leopardi’s notebooks, under the auspices of the Leopardi Centre at Birmingham, was published in the US on 9 July 2013 (Farrar, Straus and Giroux) and in the UK on 1 August 2013 (Penguin).


Professors Michael Caesar and Franco D'Intino took part in a series of events to promote the publication of Leopardi's Zibaldone in English:

  • 29 March 2014: Seminar on the Zibaldone in English with 150 high school students from the Liceo Classico Cairoli, Varese: student presentations and a talk by Michael Caesar on translating the Zibaldone. Hosted by Salvatore Consolo.
  • 2 December 2013: 'Literature and Life in Leopardi's Zibaldone.'' Italian Cultural Institute, New York. The editors are joined on this round table by Margaret Brose, Fabio Finotti, Nicola Gardini and Ann Goldstein.
  • 20 November 2013: Michael Caesar: '"Sudate carte": Translating Leopardi's Zibaldone', Dante Alighieri Society of Birmingham, University of Birmingham (Ashley 322).
  • 24 October 2013: Presentation by Franco D'Intino of the first complete English translation of the Zibaldone at the Italian Cultural Institute, New Delhi, with interventions from Vikram Seth and Ashok Vajpeyi.
  • 17 October 2013: "Secret Leopardi: the first integral English translation of the Zibaldone". An event celebrating the first translation into English of Leopardi's Zibaldone: Italian Cultural Institute, London.
  • 26 September 2013: "Antiquity after Modernity. Leopardi in English". An international seminar to present the English translation of Leopardi's Zibaldone: University of Pennsylvania.
  • 25 September 2013: "Giacomo Leopardi's Zibaldone". An event celebrating the first translation into English of Leopardi's Zibaldone:The Italian Academy, Columbia University, New York.
  • 23-24 September 2013: "Leopardi Today". An international conference to mark the publication of the English 'Zibaldone': Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut.
  • 10 July 2013: 'The first complete English edition of Leopardi's Zibaldone'. Society for Italian Studies biennial conference, Durham University. Introduced by Carlo Caruso, with Gerard Slowey and Fabio Camilletti.
