Give your time

As part of our thriving alumni community, there are many ways you can still be involved and give back to Birmingham, by sharing your career experiences with students, delivering guest lectures, offering interview tips, sitting on panels or by sharing your story in an online profile, for example.

This not only helps to support current students, but also adds to your experience and helps you develop and maintain a network of academics, other graduates and more. Have a look at the options below and get in touch if you are interested.

Inspire others

You could support current and prospective students by filling in a career profile. Please contact us if you are interested.

Whether you're just starting out, at the top of your field or somewhere in between, you’re likely to inspire others. Tell us about your career and offer an insight into the opportunities available to our students.

Share your network

You could support current students by introducing us to others.

Be a mentor

Could you mentor a student?

Our scheme aims to match a student with an alumni mentor like you who has relevant experience in the student’s area of interest. The aim is to help students prepare to find a job when they leave University. Activities could include reviewing CVs and applications, giving information and advice about their chosen career, helping them to identify potential careers, encouraging them to source work experience and internships and being a general source of support and guidance.

At the moment, mentoring relationships take place online, and we ask our volunteers to commit to a minimum of one hour’s support per month, although the frequency and length of meetings can be agreed with your mentee.

You don’t have to have done this before, or reached the ‘top’ of your career to be a mentor; we’re also keen to hear from more recent graduates. You will only be matched to a student where relevant, and we will provide guidance and support on the process.

Mentoring makes a real difference. We all know the benefits of having someone to bounce ideas off, and in gaining advice from those who've gone before. Could that be you? Find out more about how you can support students.
