Nicholas Bailey is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Responsible Business in Birmingham Business School. His research concerns investigating leadership performativity, dramaturgy, communication and decision-making. Nick is particularly interested in leadership as a social and distributed phenomenon and how leaders are developed by and respond to the challenges of different types of social pressure, risk and reward.

MBA in International Business 2012

Having spent over 25 years as a professional actor, presenter and facilitator, Nick's perspective has been shaped by the dynamics of performance he has experienced. When we investigate social processes through a performative lens it gives us rich material from which to examine the leader as influencer, persuader but also as a human being defined by relationships with others. The discourses and dynamics leaders engage in are complex which is why Nick is interested in qualitative approaches which begin to unpick the emotional layers of leadership and the relational opportunities and threats that take place.
