Emily Walsh, doctoral researcher in Philosophy at the University of BirminghamWhy did you choose to study an MRes in Philosophy?

“I chose to study an MRes in Philosophy to develop my research skills and prepare myself for pursuing a PhD in Philosophy. I feel like the MRes programme at Birmingham equipped me with the skills necessary to succeed undertaking my PhD.”

Why did you choose to undertake research at the University of Birmingham?

“The philosophy department at Birmingham has an exceptionally strong network of ethicists. As someone who works in ethics, this was a big draw for me.”

What were the best things about your course?

“Many of the academics at Birmingham are exceptional scholars but also just exceptional people, so having time to work closely with many of them was one of my favourite things about pursuing the MRes. In addition, I cannot underplay the importance for myself of the Women in Philosophy support network; some of the women I met there are friends and mentors to me now, despite the fact I am no longer at Birmingham.”

What was life like as a researcher at the University of Birmingham?

“Life as a researcher at the University of Birmingham is life-changing, as long as you make the most of it. Join all of the social groups the department has to offer, and make sure to spend quality time with the academics to really make the most out of being a researcher at Birmingham.”

What support did you receive during your studies?

“My supervisors were exceptional. They read numerous drafts of my thesis and provided invaluable feedback.”

Outside of your research, what experience have you gained and how will it help you in the future?

“I have gained invaluable experience of how to revise work in light of feedback, work independently, and how important collaborative environments are for me personally. Learning all of these things have proven vital for my success as a PhD student now.”
