Abstract:

Over the last 15 years, verbal deception detection has established itself as a viable technique alongside non-verbal techniques such as the analysis of body language or micro-expressions. This work, mostly conducted by psychologists and computer scientists, has tended to rely on pre-defined lists of so-called verbal deception ‘tells’. To date, however, no consistent set of verbal deception cues has been identified. This talk presents three novel corpus-based approaches to linguistic deception detection in spoken and written communication. Taken together, register discrepancy emerges as a useful framework for linguistic deception detection.
