Addressing the vocabulary gap using Pattern Grammar
Dr Amanda Patten (University of Birmingham) has been collaborating with the Nishkam School Trust (NST) on the application of Pattern Grammar research in the teaching of academic language skills across the school curriculum. This collaboration is detailed in an article for Impact (journal of the Chartered College of Teaching), co-written by Dr Amanda Patten and Ela McSorley (NST Director for Learning and Teaching, now Headteacher for Ark Victoria Academy.
Ela McSorley (English teacher, and Director for Learning and Teaching) and Shauna Silvera (Teacher and subject lead for Sociology and Psychology) talk about the impact that engaging with Pattern Grammar research has had on their continuing professional development and on their teaching practice. We see an example of Pattern Grammar being used in the classroom to increase students’ awareness of their own writing.
