Socially motivating readers: Conversations and connections

Speaker: Professor Teresa Cremin, Professor of Education (Literacy), Open University

Drawing on recent studies and an understanding of reading as social, affective and relational, Teresa will explore what is afforded by child-initiated book blether, and the factors - pedagogical, textual and material-that enable these spontaneous interactions that characterise communities of engaged readers. She will also consider reader relationships and the personal and social connections that develop between child readers, their peers and teachers in such communities.

Biography

Teresa Cremin is Professor of Education (Literacy) at The Open University, UK, and co-Director of the Literacy and Social Justice Centre which creates space for research, practice and advocacy to enrich educational opportunities for all. Teresa’s research interests lie in volitional reading and writing, teachers’ and children’s literate identities and creative pedagogies. An ex-teacher and teacher trainer, Teresa is a Fellow of the English Association, the Academy of Social Sciences, and the Royal Society of the Arts, and is on the Board at The Reading Agency and a UKLA Trustee.
