How political parties persuade voters to support radical ideas. Not all tall stories begin with ‘Once upon a time’, some begin with ‘When I am elected…’.
But can political parties win votes with the promise of big ideas? Radical decisions - like Brexit - can be made at the ballot box. But in 2019, ‘radical manifestos’ went down to thumping defeats. So how do parties convince voters not simply to ‘like’ radical policies but to vote for them, to believe that these policies are not only positive but also plausible?
In this first public lecture as a visiting Honorary Professor to the University of Birmingham, Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP presents new research on the relationship between voter behaviour and voter perception of policy credibility - and asks what are the issues for persuading voters to do something about inequality - and climate change?
