BRIHC In Public Event: New Perspectives on the War in Ukraine

Tuesday 29 November 2022 (18:00-19:00)

Dr Kate Smith (

3D space designed with black dots.

Historians Klaus Richter and Kate Skinner will discuss a range of perspectives on Russia’s war against Ukraine that have received less attention in recent months.

They will talk through how specific understandings of national sovereignty, identity and security have shaped Ukrainian society and politics, the war itself and Western responses to it. By doing this, they will highlight the historical, evolving nature of these concepts, which are often taken for granted as stable and natural, and which are thus rarely challenged. They will show that by looking beyond Europe at other contexts of state building, nationalism and conflict, such as in Africa, we gain a better understanding of how the legacies of geopolitical thinking from the 19th and 20th centuries often preclude solutions to 21st century conflicts.

All welcome
