Joanna Gane tells how developments in the manufacture of silver-plated articles improved early daguerreotype photography.

Developments in the industrial manufacture of silver-plated articles in 1840s Birmingham created improvements to the materials used in the daguerreotype photographic process.

A unique group of chemists developing photographic techniques and silver-plating processes at the Birmingham Royal School of Medicine and Surgery, later Queens College, Birmingham had detailed knowledge of the chemistry and processes in both arenas. In this seminar, Joanna Gane (Doctoral Researcher at Birmingham City University) discusses how their work significantly improved the early practice of daguerreotype photography.
