My research is focused on medieval historiography. Through comparing twelfth and thirteenth-century texts from a variety of genres I aim to assess the shifting representation of Thomas Becket, archbishop of Canterbury. This research builds on my MA dissertation in which I discussed the presentation of violence by Becket’s hagiographers. Through close analysis of these texts, I believe that the processes of interpretation, adaptation and invention applied to Becket’s story can be compared and discussed, while gaining an insight into the assumptions and concerns of the writers.
