Spartan Acropolis by Ellen Millender

This event is organised by the Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology (CAHA) in collaboration with the Birmingham Research Institute for History and Cultures (BRIHC)

Speaker: Professor Ellen Millender (Omar & Althea Hoskins Professor of Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean Studies and Humanities at Reed College, Oregon, USA)

(Hybrid event)

Using recent sociological approaches, Prof. Millender's talk examines Xenophon’s accounts of the Spartan politeia with a focus on Spartan emotional practices. She argues that Xenophon's Spartans inculcate the performance of emotions to ensure conformity to approved standards of comportment but ultimately failed to produce leaders capable of performing managing emotions for the greater good of their community.
