Having taught Russian across the world to students of all levels and various cultural backgrounds Maria joined the University of Birmingham in 2022 in the capacity of Teaching Fellow in Russian. Alongside practicing teaching Maria is conducting research in modern teaching technics based on the use of user-generated content and in particular Internet memes. 

Maria is also involved in the development of the university’s Digital First project

  • MA in Teaching Foreign Languages and Cultures (Kursk State University, Russia)

Biography

Before joining the University of Birmingham Maria taught a wide array of Russian language and culture modules in Russia (Kursk State University), France (Université de Lorraine) and the UK (University of Warwick). 

Teaching

Maria currently teaches the following undergraduate courses in the Department of Modern Languages:

  • Russian Core I & II- Beginners: Russian Language in Context & Russian Life;
  • Russian Core III & IV - Intermediate: Understanding Russia and the Russians;
  • Russian Core III & IV - Advanced: Understanding Russia and the Russians;
  • Russian Core VI & VII - Language and Contexts;
  • Russian Level 1 (Languages for All)

Research

My research interest lies at the intersection of contemporary digital art and didactics. Currently I am writing a dissertation on Internet memes of the Russian Speaking cyberspace and their application in teaching Russian as a foreign language.
