Lucy Oakey currently works as a Translational Research Manager at University of Birmingham and completed a PhD in Experimental Medicine, in 2020.
How has your career developed since graduating from the University of Birmingham?
I moved straight in to employment with the University and have loved building on the network I established during my studies.
How did your course help prepare you for your career?
My critical thinking, ability to make the complex appear simple and excellent time management skills.
Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?
The close links to the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust meant that I saw my research having a real impact to patient's which was always a focus for me.
What inspired you most during your time at Birmingham? For example, guest speakers, lecturers, research, friendships, extra-curricular activities:

What advice would you give to current students studying on the course?
The University of Birmingham is a brilliant place to study. The campus is a vibrant place to be and there is a huge focus on student satisfaction. All the staff are intent with you achieving your potential and with their support you can only succeed.
How would you advise people to make the most of their time on their course?
Always try and go above and beyond; seek out different opportunities for internships or placements as these will be invaluable when moving into the professional world.
