Hannah Nieto currently works as a ENT Registrar at Russels Hall Hospital in Dudley and completed a PhD in Molecular Biology - recurrent thyroid cancer in 2020.
How has your career path been since graduating from the University of Birmingham?
Since completing my PhD I have returned to clinical practice as a ENT surgical registrar, with my current placement at Russells Hall Hospital.
How did your course help prepare you for your career?
Completing my PhD has facilitated me applying for and being awarded an Academic Clinical Lectureship, due to start in October.
What originally attracted you to studying at Birmingham?
UoB is a centre of excellence for thyroid research, and several successful clinical PhD candidates have already studied under Professor Chris McCabe, and recommended him as a supervisor to me.
What inspired you most during your time at Birmingham? For example, guest speakers, lecturers, research, friendships or extra-curricular activities.
The ability to create collaborations across fields of interest and institutes - there is so much scope for people to help, meaning if you don't already know how to do something you can probably find out.
What advice would you give to current students studying on the course?
It can take a while to complete a PhD but if you are thinking of a specialist career it may be necessary to do one. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication but it is worth it in the end. It is also a great opportunity to learn about one area in a lot of detail.
What tips/ advice would you give to people who are considering studying your course at Birmingham?
Enjoy the facilities available, including modules on taught courses, expertise in other areas and the opportunity to teach.
