Why did you apply to study Nursing at the University of Birmingham?

For me, the initial attraction to the University of Birmingham was the fact that Birmingham has such an amazing children's hospital that I knew would open lots of opportunities for me. I came to visit the university and I remember being so overwhelmed by how lovely the campus was as well as what my course could offer. I was also really excited to come here as they offered the integrated masters which is something that not many universities offer for nursing.

What’s the best part of your course at Birmingham?

I love how the course is organised in terms of placement and studying. We do blocks of theory followed by placement. I find this is super enriching as you can apply what you have learnt in University to practical work. The fact that our placement blocks are relatively short means that we have a bigger variety of placements. This means that there is plenty of opportunity to experience very different nursing disciplines to decide which is for you.

Where is your favourite place in the city of Birmingham?

I would have to say it’s a tie between Harborne and Digbeth. Harborne is so lovely in the day with loads of charity shops and coffee places that can be shared with friends, but also perfect for a day of TLC! Digbeth on the other hand is full of pubs and bars so perfect for a fun evening. I love it because It’s away from the campus and accommodation so is an opportunity to meet a range of people and see the city. There are also often music events such as jazz at the spotted dog which is perfect to enjoy with friends.

What has been your social highlight so far?

I feel that the University of Birmingham is super sociable and there are so many opportunities to meet people. There have been many social highlights for me not only with societies, but also just with housemates and course mates. Last year I attended MedBall which is the Medical Society Ball. This was such a good evening complete with a 3 course meal and lots of dancing – I am attending this year also!

What inspired you most during your time as a student?

I think that my nursing peers have helped inspire me through my course. It became clear quite quickly that this course doesn’t offer a ‘typical’ university experience which was hard at first. However, It meant that I spend a lot of time with course mates who are all going through the same experience. It is lovely to be able to talk about what we have experienced in practice and to be able to support one another in those difficult times.

What have you struggled the most with during your studies?

I certainly had anticipated that nursing was going to be challenging but I don’t think I had properly considered how resilient I have had to be. As much as I love placement it can be hard emotionally when you are exposed to difficult situations. I think that this is something that you can’t really prepare for, instead you must learn from experience. Through experience I have learnt what helps me to process these emotions such as running, journalling or talking it through with those I trust most. I have also learnt to speak up and ask for help as it is important to recognise when something has really affected you as we are only human.

“Overall, I’ve hugely enjoyed my experience as a student at UOB so far, not only within my course but also outside of my studies. I have gained skills and experiences for life that I will cherish. I have met so many amazing people had I not met if I didn’t take this opportunity.”
